The percentages reported in the tabulation are the district-wide, province-wide and nation-wide percentage of villages that had experienced at least one incidence of drought during the past three years. However, differently than previous years, in the 2019 Podes, incidence of natural disasters were only asked for the last year. As such, incidence in 2019 might systematically differ relative to preceding years. Data are taken from Statistics Indonesia's Villages Potential (Podes) natural disaster module from 1990-2019.
The Podes data suggests that nationwide, there were 4% of villages throughout Indonesia thad experienced drought at least once during 2018-2019. Provinces with highest incidence of drought episodes in 2018-2019 include DI Yogyakarta (12% of villages), Gorontalo (12%), and Nusa Tenggara Timur (11%). Such high drought occurrences are attributable to low access to clean water for irigation, and frequent forest fires occurring in the region. Meanwhile, provinces with lowest incidence of droughts in 2018-2019 include Kepulauan Bangka Belitung (1%), DKI Jakarta (0.37%), and Papua (0.14%).
