The indicator reports the total number of preschools, primary and secondary schools, colleges per 1000 youth population from 1996-2019. The number of schools data are taken from the Villages Potential (Podes) data. We account for both public and private schools or colleges in our calculation. Youth population is defined as population aged 24 and below, and youth population data is taken from the National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) data..
Podes data suggests that the number of schools, adjusting for population size, has been increasing in the past decade. From 2.5 schools per 1000 population in 1999, the number has risen to 3.6 schools per 1000 population in 2019. Provinces with more developed economies tend to experience greater scarcity in schoolings per capita. Provinces with the highest number of schools per 1000 population in 2019 include Sulawesi Utara (5.8 schools per 1000 population), Kalimantan Tengah (5.7 schools), and Maluku Utara (5.5 schools), while the number is lowest in Kepulauan Riau (2.68 schools), Banten (2.5 schools) and DKI Jakarta (2.3 schools).
